Southern Metal Industries (Smi) was founded in the early 1950’s by W. Garnett Smith. William G. (Bill) Smith, Jr., son of the founder, is the current president of Smi. Two of his sons are now active in the business. Smi has manufactured shelf filing, library shelving, and systems furniture for over forty years. In addition, our current product line includes a wide range of tables, training tables, chairs, storage cabinets, filing cabinets, freestanding desks, hutches, and other furniture for the office, education, and the medical field.

We have a network of over 300 dealers throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The depth of our product offering allows our smaller non aligned dealers to compete with dealers who represent the larger furniture manufactures with our comprehensive line of top quality products while being free of the quotas and constraints sometimes imposed by these larger companies. Smi works directly with our dealers and their customers to coordinated design & layout, to calculate cost, and to schedule delivery and installation of the products.

We manufacture nearly all of our products at our 142,000 square foot factory in Ringgold, Georgia. We utilize modern, state of the art machinery and equipment to punch, laser cut, bend, weld, and powder coat all of or steel components. Most other items used in our products are supplied from domestic sources.

We apply environmentally sustainable practices throughout our manufacturing processes, using a high degree of renewable or recycled content in items such as steel, fabrics, wood, and shipping materials. Our polyester hybrid powder releases no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere when baked onto the steel parts. Water based adhesives are used in gluing applications. Items are bulk packed on pallets in large cartons to minimize the amount of packing material to be disposed of at the job site. Our ongoing goal is to continue to seek ways to minimize our impact on the environment.

Our products are built using our own proprietary designs. They are not clones or a knock off of another manufacturer. We pride ourselves in the quality of our products, designs, and workmanship.
